Learning is a Lifestyle

Realizations
  • How have I myself (i.e., the teacher candidate) learned in school, and how do I learn most effectively?  Why do some people learn better than I and I better than others?

I never thought that there are types of learning style and through my reading I came across the word VARK,this was introduce by Neil Fleming, I tried the survey just for fun, lo and behold! I am not aware that I am a read/write learning type of learner and I have to smile and think for awhile because I never thought that  I will be on that category but looking back on how I cope up with the lesson (Module 1) I ask myself how did I learned? and how did I learn effectively the answer is through reading and writing and it clearly describes what I usually do whenever I am looking for an answer is read, read, and read because it is already my practice that whenever I have some doubts or things unanswered I don’t rely on people’s word but instead I do m own research. An R&W type of learners preferred to use the printed word as the most important way to convey and receive information. I am not sure if I am a fast learner or a slow learner but  what I know is that I take time to study and understand my lesson and this is not only during my school years but also at work.

  • How do we know if a person has successfully learned?
Can you suggest a “fairer definition” of learning and academic achievement?

“Unless someone can look into the core of your heart, and see the degree of your passion, or look into the depths of your soul and see the extent of your will, then they have no business telling you what you can and cannot achieve. Because while they may know the odds, they do not know you”.   by: Sandra King

I just came across this adage and I think it is appropriate to put it. For me you cannot gauge a person if he/she is successfully learned as there are factors affecting the learning patterns of an individual. Some can argue that it is both a process and a product as pointed out by George Roberts but learning is not only by theory or by concept or just filling the minds of an individual because there are people who gained higher education or enlightenment but they are unable to apply it in the outside world and there are people who did not received a higher education but they are considered to be learned. If we say that the individual learners should or can apply what they have learned from their own academe then is it safe to argue that those who didn’t receive a formal education is considered as a successful learner too?

Learning coincides with academic achievement one of examples of this is what the Malaysian University is aspiring where they can produce graduates that are ready, equipped with knowledge and skills who can join the workforce who can solve real-world problems. They are not only focus on producing graduates who are classroom thought but a students who can achieve academically in the real world in short they are not just a “know that” but at the same time a “know how” individual, Let me leave a quote from John Amos Comenius he said “The proper education of the young does not consist in stuffing their heads with a mass of words, sentences, and ideas dragged together out of various authors, but in opening up their understanding to the outer world, so that a living stream may flow from their owns minds, just as leaves, flowers, and fruit spring from the bud on a tree.

  • Christa McAuliff e’s quote: “I touch the future. I teach.”
Put on your creative-thinking hat and come up with one or more brief statements that describe positive aspects of teaching.

A teacher is not there just there to improve student’s test score but to mold, educate, influence, open the mind of an individual.

A Teachers take PRIDE in their work. P- ersonal + R-esponsibility + I-n + D-elivering + E-xellence

  • After some thinking, write a personal statement about the following: What kind of teacher do you want to become? What strengths do you want to have? What kinds of potential weaknesses might you need to overcome?

I don’t want to be the best teacher to my students but instead I want to be an influencer, an encouragement in their lives, I want to have an enriching effect on the daily lives of my students. Why I want to be this type of an educator because I for one have experience to have a teacher who encourage me, who influence me and provide an enriching effect in my life. I have met a teacher that encourage me to do better to achieve more and to not just settle for less because that was given to you but instead aim higher and dream big. Yes part of being a teacher is to impart knowledge and skills but creating a lasting impact to one’s life is the most important thing because we never know what a simple words or encouragement can do to a person’s life. I considered this trait of mine to be both my strength and weaknesses; being passionate, soft –hearted, competitive, perfectionist and patience. These traits sometimes gets me in trouble as some co-workers doesn’t understand why I do everything in excellence and why do I need to protect my subordinates who are undeserving. I don’t want to change anything nor overcome anything because this traits makes me a human being specially if in time I will land a teaching position.

  • (From what you have experienced in this introductory module, what do you anticipate for the rest of the term?  How do you envision the course will proceed?)

Base on the introductory module I now understand a little bit of how the course will proceed. I am still coping up with the first module and yes, I was a bit confuse but through the instructions given which is very easy to follow I was able to finish the tasks given and I enjoyed every bit of information that I can get from the module and from my researches and I envisioned that the course will be enlightening, fun, enjoyable and at the same time it will increase my knowledge to become an educator.

  • What phenomena (events, situations, or conditions) might you be interested in to investigate?
  • How would you state your hypothesis?
  • What research method do you think will be appropriate?

I would like to tackle on the current curriculum of DEPeD which is the K-12 program, wherein there are a lot of opposing views regarding this curriculum. And my hypothesis would be The socio-economic impact of the K-12 curriculum to the millennial students”. The research method that can be use is survey research and correlational research.

I am happy to learn and ready for the next module.
